Students are asked to write about a film released in 2019 or 2020 that you believe has relevance. It may be a feature, foreign or animated film or a documentary that you have seen online or in a theater. Please include in your essay: (1) why you think this particular film matters, and (2) how film, in general, impacts our society.
If you need suggestions regarding a film to write about, you can check out the Avon Online offerings at avontheatre.org
The essays will each be read by at least two judges from a panel of professional journalists, published authors, filmmakers and educators. A Scholarship Awards Reception and Ceremony will be held at the Avon to celebrate the winners this summer. Each winner will receive a check made out to the college they will be attending in the Fall of 2020.
The Avon Scholarship Essay Contest is sponsored by the Avon Film Education Initiative, which promotes film literacy by supporting teacher and student attendance at the Avon and by granting scholarships to high school seniors. Through its diverse offerings of independent, foreign, documentary and historical films, the Avon is committed to instilling a life-long appreciation of the art and significance of film.
