What You Should Know
By Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz
You should know that I deeply appreciate the efforts of Congresswoman Grace Meng for being the first elected official to respond to my Memo to New York’s Delegation to provide financial assistance for bodega owners in the next federal stimulus package.
As the Leading Member of New York’s Congressional Delegation, US Rep. Grace Meng wasted no time in taking my recommendations from the letter I emailed to the entire delegation on April 15, 2020, posted as a Twitter reminder on April 20, 2020, and wrote about twice in my What You Should Know column, titled El Papel Vital de las Bodegas Comunales, and The Vital Role of the Iconic Neighborhood Bodega.
My April 15, 2020 column can be read below this column or at this link: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/The-Vital-Role-of-the-Iconic-Neighborhood-Bodega.html?soid=1132181407536&aid=5rwNsONt32k
You should know that I was thrilled to read a posting today written by Carlotta Mohamed on Queens.com about US Rep. Meng’s efforts to help bodegas with the next federal stimulus package. The article states:
“Congresswoman Grace Meng is leading members of the New York Congressional Delegation in a letter sent to the House leaders April 30 requesting help for approximately 13,000 bodegas, ethnic grocery stores and small independent supermarkets in New York City. “… Meng is requesting grants and refrigeration units, connections with farms, hazard pay for frontline employees, and wage exemptions from federal income taxes. Meng’s letter also seeks assistance for members of the public who shop at these retailers, which would in turn help those businesses.”
My dear reader, I hope and pray that our combined efforts will help New York’s bodega owners and communities who are served by these vital, small independent supermarkets, especially during this coronavirus pandemic.
You should also know that my counsel, Christopher Lynn, told me that NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson contacted him on April 15, 2020 to express his gratitude for my recommendations to help bodega owners and the communities they serve.
Once again, I sincerely thank you Congresswoman Grace Meng, and I look forward to working with you and New York’s Congressional Delegation when I am elected to serve in the United States Congress.
I am Councilman Reverend Rubén Díaz, and this is what you should know.
