I am regularly receiving updates on the developments regarding a reported positive Coronavirus test of a student and the two school closures in The Bronx at the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology and South Bronx Preparatory: A College Board School. We first and foremost keep the students, families and staff in positive thought as we address the immediate concerns while also collaborating on longer term solutions.
I am in conversation with leadership at the NYC Department of Education, NYC Department of Health, New York State and federal officials as we are actively monitoring the situation so we take appropriate actions to ensure the health and safety of students and their families. The two affected Bronx schools will be thoroughly sanitized, cleaned and inspected before any students, teachers and staff return to the schools. Moreover, we are discussing ways for food to be provided to students in need and ensure that educators and staff receive appropriate guidance on preventative guidance measures as well.
In the meantime, please take continual precautions to protect the your health and the well-being of your loved ones including:
-Call 311 if you think that you need to be tested so that you are connected to a clinician to give guidance on possible next steps
-Frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
-Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
-Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue
-Staying home when you are sick
-Avoiding contact with someone who is sick
-Disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces
We know that this is a difficult time, but, I am confident New Yorkers will work together to persevere.
