Shape your future | Census 2020

Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Census Agencies, New York State Urban Development Corporation, Empire State Development, the New York Department of State, and the New York Department of Labor have recently awarded the Office of the Bronx Borough President with a Census Outreach Grant to help with the borough’s census count.

The award money ($328,000) will be disbursed by the Office of the Bronx Borough President to local non-profits, who will conduct targeted “MAKE THE BRONX COUNT” Census outreach in communities throughout the Borough before the September 30 federal deadline. The 2020 Census can be filled out at

Local non-profits will use the grant money to conduct strategic Census outreach, such as pop-up enrollment sites, phone/text banking operations and social media campaigns, throughout The Bronx.

Bronx County qualified for the grant, with the money being used to address the low Census response rates in the borough, compared to New York State’s and national Census response averages. Currently, Bronx County has a 59.2% response rate compared to New York State’s 61.4% rate.

“Time is running out and we need to make sure The Bronx gets counted,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “The 2020 Census is important in having our voices heard and we need to make sure that we stand up and get counted. Filling out the Census is vital in determining funding for our communities and redistricting. Let’s all work together to make sure we protect the federal resources we need to continue our growth for the next decade.”

As part of his efforts to get the word out, Borough President Diaz Jr. will be partnering up with New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, on Thursday September 10, 2020, for a “Census 2020 Battle of the Boroughs” phone-banking competition, with the goal of encouraging our residents to be counted by responding to the Census.
