NEW YORK – Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza announced this week the launch of the 14th annual NYC School Survey, one of the nation’s largest annual surveys. The survey will be available online and in print in 10 languages for all members of school communities to complete by March 31. The NYC School Survey is designed to gather feedback and to ensure the voices of students, teachers and parents are heard. It is aligned to the six core elements of the Framework for Great Schools: Rigorous Instruction, Collaborative Teachers, Supportive Environment, Effective School Leadership, Strong Family-Community Ties, and Trust.
“Thanks to the NYC School Survey, we get a snapshot every year of how our students, families and staff members feel about their school communities,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “I urge everyone to complete the survey by March 31 so we can continue to elevate your voices, learn from your experiences, and advance equity and excellence in all of our schools.”
Last year marked the third year that over half a million parents completed the survey. Overall, survey participation exceeded one million responses for the fourth consecutive year, with 1,026,220 students, parents, and staff members participating.
“The Framework for Great Schools is a powerful example of research informing policy and practice,” said James Kemple, Executive Director of the Research Alliance for NYC Schools. “Our work together has helped ensure that the Survey gathers important information about how parents, students and teachers experience their schools and the school capacities that matter for improving teaching and learning. We urge teachers, students and parents to complete the Survey, so their perspectives are represented in the results.”
The NYC School Survey represents the DOE’s ongoing commitment to listening to and learning from students, families and educators and is designed in partnership with the Research Alliance for NYC Schools. It provides actionable information on school capacity that is aligned to the DOE’s research-based Framework for Great Schools.
The survey collects information about a school’s capacity across six essential elements – Rigorous Instruction, Supportive Environment, Collaborative Teachers, Effective School Leadership, Strong Family-Community Ties, and Trust – that drive student achievement. Research has demonstrated that schools strong on the elements of the Framework are more likely to produce gains in attendance and student achievement.
Families will receive a paper survey that will be backpacked home and distributed at school events beginning this week. Parents may also choose to submit their feedback online at NYCSchoolSurvey.org. If parents do not have their paper survey form, they can use the code lookup tool on the survey login page to receive their unique access code and complete the survey. Students in grades 6 through 12 will receive and complete their surveys in school, either on paper or online, while school staff will take the survey online. All survey responses are due by March 31.
The parent and student surveys are available both on paper and online at NYCSchoolSurvey.org in ten languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu.
Results from the survey are included in each school’s School Quality Snapshot available online and in each school’s School Quality Reports, available online as searchable web-based and mobile-ready tools.
