Celebration of Taiwanese Heritage in the New York City Council Chambers

You should know that this Thursday, October 24th, 2019 at 5pm, in the New York City Council Chamber, I will be celebrating Taiwanese Heritage Day with more than 200 leaders and members of New York’s Taiwanese community and the community at large.

It is important for you to know that this is not the first time I am hosting an event to celebrate the rich culture and diversity of one of New York’s immigrant communities.

When I was in the New York State Senate, the first thing I did was to organize and sponsor the very first Dominican Heritage Day, Garifuna Heritage Day, Bangladeshi Heritage Day, and Taiwanese Heritage Day in the New York State Senate.

My dear reader, you should know that no other Senator had taken this initiative before I arrived in the Senate Chamber to welcome immigrant communities such as New York’s Dominican, Garifuna, Bangladeshi and Taiwanese communities to address the New York State Senate in their own languages, and to celebrate their cultures.

You should also know that I held these very special events annually.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am truly honored and blessed to have been able to open the Senate chamber doors to welcome these immigrant communities into the halls of government.

As I did last year in the New York City Council Chambers, my fellow Council Members and I look forward to welcoming members of New York’s Taiwanese community again this coming Thursday. The delegation will include Ambassador Lily L. W. Hsu from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and Mr. Justin Yu, Chair of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of New York to celebrate Taiwan’s culture with me at City Hall.

I am Council Member Rev. Rubén Díaz and this is what you should know.
